Red Stag has completed, or is in the process of completing, 7 large timber buildings as part of Red Stag’s manufacturing site. Key building metrics, design and images have been outlined within a number of downloadable case studies below. They include:

  • Red Stag CLT Factory
  • Red Stag Mobile Plant Workshop
  • Red Stag Pressure Treatment Plant
  • Red Stag Reman Building
  • Red Stag Sawmill Building
  • Red Stag Stacker Building
  • Red Stag Trimline Building

In addition:

  • The case study of the recently completed New Zealand Post Depot has also been included.

Mid-Rise Wood Construction is a six-year partnership between the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) and Red Stag Investments Ltd. The aim of this $6.75 million programme is to encourage widespread adoption of precision-engineered timber in mid-rise building construction. Since its inception in 2018, the programme has assembled a pool of New Zealand professionals experienced in mid-rise wood building design and construction to help share and grow knowledge and expertise with the broader industry.

Engineered timber is not only naturally beautiful, but also provides a very strong, low-carbon and comparably low-cost alternative to steel & concrete. It is easy to transport, relatively light and has outstanding earthquake and fire resilience. The use of prefabrication can decrease construction time by as much as 30%, and reduces costs compared with traditional building methods. Combining cross-laminated timber (CLT), laminated veneer lumber (LVL), glulam and panelised framing timber creates a cost-effective, fast, resilient and sustainable system for mid-rise construction.

Red Stag Timber – CLT Factory Building

Waipa State Mill Road, Rotorua | Constructed

This building is one of the only CLT manufacturing facilities in New Zealand and will enable the local supply of CLT timber in this country.

New Zealand Post Depot

SPA Point Taupo | Constructed

This building development is part of a new light commercial development on land near the AC Baths in Taupo.

Red Stag Timber – Mobile Plant Workshop

Waipa State Mill Road, Rotorua | Constructed

This is the workshop and store for mobile plant. The unique aspect of this building will be the use of CLT columns and beams for the portal structure.

Red Stag Timber – Pressure Treatment Plant 2 Building

Waipa State Mill Road, Rotorua | Under Construction

This $6.7 million building will be part of the Red Stag Timber operation.

Red Stag Timber – Reman Building

Waipa State Mill Road, Rotorua | Constructed

Red Stag’s Remanufacturing building converts timber that does not make ‘structural’ grade into high-value engineered timber for products such door cores and windows. The building is 111m by 45m clear span

Red Stag Timber – Sawmill Building

Waipa State Mill Road, Rotorua | Constructed

The mill is now the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, milling over 1 million tonnes of logs annually and producing in excess of 600,000m3 of timber. It can process a log every five seconds at maximum pace.

Red Stag Timber – Stacker Building

Waipa State Mill Road, Rotorua | Constructed

The stacker building automatically stacks timber, 80% of which is filleted to be kiln-dried. Notably, this is the first building that used columns and beams ripped from CLT panels.

Red Stag Timber – Trimline Building

Waipa State Mill Road, Rotorua | Under Construction

The trimline and bins are the back end of the sawmill. This is the second building to leverage CLT columns and beams as this is a cost-effective construction technique. Using CLT in place of LVL and Glulam brings capacity to the NZ mass timber market.
